Also, Last Man Standing rather than scenario Victory Conditions: A player wins if the opponent to his/her left has no figures remaining on the battlefield.

I've created two armies for this: They can be found here.

P.S.: Looking forward to this. Five for Fighting is a very nice map, however we play on it.

Well met!

The two armies I created for Five for Fighting contain mostly units I have never fielded, but should do well grabbing Treasure Glyphs. But I was really tempted to field the following (which is more in line with what I'd normally play in a free for all):

Spoiler Alert!

First army
SotM Drake 170
Airborne Elite 110
Ninjas of the Northern Wind 110
Agent Carr 100
Otonashi 10

Second army
Gladiatrons x2 160
Blastatrons x3 180
Major X17 100
Zetacrons 60

We now have a new local player contact, who will be coming on Tuesday for the first time. Although he offered to just watch, we may change maps so he can play along with us as a sixth player. Welcome to "Emperor!" (He's already on the site). We may switch the format to a Team Game. Stay tuned!

Well met!

As we've been given the opportunity to change armies if we change maps, I'll play the following regardless:

Earth
140 Master Win Chiu Woo
130 Master Lao Xin
90 Chen Tang
70 Zhen Yuan
70 Lee Jun
500 points, 5 spaces

Feylund
150 WoA x 3
140 Racheim
110 Brunak
100 Syvarris
500 points, 14 spaces

CHAS ARMIES

Earth: "Awesome Agents"

Motley Max 135
Agent Carr 100
Krav Maga 100
Micro Corps Troopers x2 160
Total: 495

Noxdorma: "Frenemies"
Scavorith 185
Iron Lich Viscerot 150
Necrotech Wraithriders 90
WC Tuck Harrington 60
Total: 485

I've just added Home Planet data to all my proxy cards (they have no Basic side) for ease of army building. You learn some interesting things doing that. For example, that Motley Max, who looks like a fantasy baddie, is actually a Mutant from Earth! I will be proxying some AOA figures, although I have the new cards printed out.

The sixth player and new map are now confirmed for tomorrow; so I'll start building it on the table. Since he's a new player, although he apparantly has quite a collection of Scape, I've given him a few army building hints. And a Team Game will be more friendly, since he'll know who his friends and enemies are, rather than a more cutthroat Free For All!

Thanks to Sherman Davies for the initial contact, and for suggesting this map, which is in our hard copy Map Library I maintain. Once again we'll see some of the latest released AOA characters in this game, some with proxy figures. Oddly enough, with a War of the Worlds format, they may combine some of the "original enemies" from the same home planet, such as in my Noxdorma army "Frenemies!"

FINAL GAME PREP

At the last minute,
as we often do, I noted which terrain (a third Marro Hive) and figures I don't have (but can always proxy) in our private email group, and some of the other guys will bring most of them for me today! So I'll only be using two or three proxies now for my armies and those of Kolakoski--which I also build for a game, since he no longer has any Scape stuff himself after moving to a smaller apartment. Thanks to Sherman Davies and Thrasher Darkrai for coming up with most of them! We all have slightly different things in our personal collections. One tiny change to the map is my addition of the two AOA trees from my new Battle Box, which give a bit more cover than the old ones. And I'll be making a special courtesy wake up call this morning for Taeblewalker, who has to drive three hours from upstate to get here to run his game!

Since I host our games at my place, I build the maps the previous day. Unless its a free build or complex build, in which case the monthly GM will come by to construct it on an earlier date. Building Sherman Davies' map Massacre On Marr yesterday once again as he suggested so all six of us can play reminded me of the truly huge epic game we played on it not long ago. (You can see photos and commentary upthread). I keep a hard copy Map Library of all the maps we use for reuse.

With a sixth actual player suddenly becoming available this should be another epic game, since no one has to run two armies at once, as SD did last time. This is how we deal with an uneven number of players showing up for a Team Game. Usually another person does the Two Army Honors for the second game, following the GM playing two in the first game. In a Free For All of course its not an issue.

Life often intruding on our game schedule, players sometimes drop in or out at the last minute, so we have to be flexible. Sometimes when we meet a new contact who is a perspective additional player, this person doesn't actually follow up to come over later on. But in this case a new person talked to me through our PM system and then as usual we contacted through regular email, which is a bit easier to handle for communication. And that way we can include the new person eventually in our private email group for future scheduling and changes to the game that may come up, etc. You can become one if you want to join up as well, although six player is usually all we have room for around our table here. I also play here on other dates, with Heroscape and many other board games, so new folks can also drop over just to meet me and hang out, or do a two player game on other occasions besides our monthly group events.

 Its always great to meet new players, which usually happens here through the site, or from a local Store Event or etc. People still move to NYC and become locals, or find out about our group one way or another! Although I'm not on social media, others of our group are, and can meet people that way too.

One day I chatted on Board Game Geek with someone I noticed was here in the City on a Saturday morning. It turned out he lived just five short blocks from here! We met for lunch that day to hang out a bit, and he's now one of my best friends.

I continue to live vicariously through y'all.

*Drowns back into the depths*
Well, one of our member comes down from Westchester. If you have a day free you can always come down for hanging out and a couple of two player games, almost any day or evening you can make it. Just send me a PM for that to set it up. Almost every subway comes within five blocks of me, here at The Game Palace!

The New York City Gang of Six?

We had two great games yesterday, with a full six players for each. This is as many as can comfortably fit around my big table. Our new guest actually left after Game One, and then unexpectedly to both him and us, returned for Game Two. It was pretty odd to get a knock on the door when all of us who were gathered were playing! Who could it be?Luckily, our guest lives pretty close by; not in walking distance but its a short ride for him. So we had played just a couple of turns of a five player Game Two, and restarted the second game with all six players instead of five after adjusting the Start Zones we'd set up. So as usual we started a bit after Noon, and played until dinner time.

While we've kept our original name since for our name recognition--see the start of this thread for our group history-- The New York City Gang of Four, we've had five regulars for a while now, and it looks like we may have a sixth now! That would be great. It would also mean that our regular monthly games may be filled up more often, and we'll only be able to accept visitors when we have vacancies. This happens fairly frequently. We do our scheduling of monthly game dates off site in a small email group we use for that and related purposes. Also, when some games are planned ahead for a certain number of players, we can't always adjust at the last minute, as we did for this one by switching out the map, which was for five players only (we may try to use it again in the future).

Being retired, I'm usually available for other dates for one on one games, such as for the series of Renegade free Bonus scenarios they post every month; I've played and printed out the first seven, and will probably play #8 and possibly others before our next monthly group game. All except one have been for two players only so far. (See my thread Playing The Renegade Free Monthly Scenaios in General Discussion. Participants include the designer of about half of them). One group member and another Scaper have said they'll try them out with me this month; I usually play them solitaire first, and don't always play them with a live opponent. Two player sessions of any kind are always possible, and are a good way for me to meet new players and hang out a bit too, so feel free to PM me here if you want to do one, more or less on a date of your convenience, either during the week or on a weekend.

And besides Scaping, I have a large collection of many other board games, which I'm usually playing every week as well. The number of players for these games is always in flux depending on who wants to show up. I send out a private newsletter to about 35 gamers, most of whom live locally, with suggested future game dates for these as well. You can see my entire collection on www.boardgamegeek.com for Chas59. Other folks occasionally bring over one of their own games to play also.

So come join me here at what Kolokoski has christened "The Game Palace," although its just my messy man cave, with lots of board games and 30,000 54mm miniatures all over the place.

Taeblewalker Hosts Two Six Player Games

We just played two wild and exciting games with our new player, who will probably become our sixth regular group member. He hadn't Scaped for many years, but still had his old collection, and has now purchased all the AOA stuff that is out. He took lots of photos, which should appear here soon. I've also asked those who haven't posted their armies up to put them here as well.

Game One: Team Game

Since this was a rare session where we had six live players, it took a while to get everyone seated, settled, and to choose our teams. Both players on each team shared one of the three double sized Start Zones on this substitute map by Sherman, which we'd switched to in order to accomodate all six, as GM TW had previously selected one with only five start zones (it looks like a fun map, and we'll probably use it in the future).

The teams became Chas (me) and the new guest and new site member (and now new group member by unanimous agreement) Emperor with Thrasher Darkrai and Taeblewalker on our left, and Sherman Davies and Kolakoski on our right. There were a lot of new AOA figures showing up for the first time. Being on our left, I was particularly concerned about and wanting to fight Thrasher's Queen Maladrix and her bugs. So both of our team sidled over to our left to engage them, while leaving our right flank luckily unengaged at first. We were planning a "Longstreet" (Confederate historical general) defense--a normal tactic for me where I first set up a defense, receive the enemy's attack, and then counterattack.

Indeed, she and her bugs came right at us, and soon my entire army was engaged with them. Eventually I moved Scavorith (using a proxy figure; he's not released yet) against the Queen, buffing him twice with my wounded Viscerot's vile injection tokens during the succession of two turns taken back to back. Since his power's extra turn had been ruled eligible for a second vile injection on the site (probably in his Book)--the second turn occurred concurrently but was considered a separate turn, so I was able to make two attacks with seven dice against her! The first one wounded her badly, the second just added one more wound. I didn't mind too much then whe Viscerot went down, since the Queen was soon to follow, and then we finished off her Honor Guard as well. However, two of us had been infected by them, sadly including my Scavorith.

By now Emperor, (who is a big Captain America fan, and was even wearing a Cap tee shirt on his first visit to The Game Palace), who GM TW had cleared to use that figure in his army, moved up to the huge center hill. He himself suggested pulling back after our epic tussle with the enemy which had finally eliminated them. But his blood was up! Since Scavorith was now "living on borrowed time"as the old DC comic heroes The Challengers of the Unknown used to say, (and I hate those parasitical bugs) I charged Scavorith up the hill and into battle to support Cap. Scavorith lasted several turns before the bug on his back (actually on his card) took him down, and I was able to take out a squaddie or two up on the hill. Cap, who although very powerful, was now engaged by multiple squaddie opponents. Mindful of Cap's conterstrike power, the enemy squaddies didn't actually attack him for a few turns, merely held him in place. But as he lay about him taking out many of them over several turns, they finally ganged up on him once again and took him down. It had been an epic battle on the center hill in its tangle of jungle bushes on the top, which had also been the scene of much mayhem the last time we used this big map by SD.

SD himself had sacrificed most of his army for his team earlier, and now his partner K. had the most points left on the board. So their team was declared the winner, rather than playing out the last few turns with decimated forces on the part of the rest of us. My peak exciting moment had been taking out Queen Maladrix, and I'd been glad to be able to do it using two vile injections on Scavorith (my first time playing him) just before Viscerot was taken out.

We'd all enjoyed this game, especially Emperor, who hadn't Scaped since he was a kid. He'd dropped by the uptown game store which had been holding Store Events by a pal of ours who sometimes plays here too, and discovered by their advertising that Heroscape was back. So he got excited and now owns all the released AOA stuff. I think Thrasher Darkrai has all of it too; I own some of it, with SD having some also from the two initial boxes (K. and TW have none, but are free to borrow ours).

It was great to finally have a full table of six players, the maximum we can fit here comfortably (barely). We battled our brains out! Emperor now had to leave, and we went downstairs to the local deli for some food and drink as a break between games.

Game Two: Free For All

I had a bit of fun early with Motley Max advancing to chain grab some of my neighbor Sherman Davies' figures in our anticipated five player game!

But then we reset the game and made new equidistant Start Zones, rejiggering them a second time when our sixth player, who had left after Game One, suddenly and unexpectedly returned after we'd only played a couple of turns. This time my Agent army held back a bit, but took some high ground on a small hill in front of me, since I was the only one in an entirely flat start zone except for Kolakoski. The other guys moved out and attacked each other more quickly, and we mostly did some diplomacy to get an ally; I had one with Thrasher Darkrai on my left. SD remained on my right. But where we'd started to fight early in the first aborted game, this time around SD and K. went at each other early, and so I got a reprieve on my right flank, and just set up a balanced defense on both sides behind the two nearby ruins.

Thrasher was playing the brand new Major Q11, which is some beautiful mini (I'll be getting one soon myself), but luckily for me he was busy engaged with Emperor on his other side for the whole game.

Later on I started taking shots at some of SD's figures, some of many who had moved up to the big central hill. With them having both height and jungle, I only made one shot of three, but honor was satisfied. It was then pointed out eventually by another that I had one of the largest armies on the board. I hadn't been turtling on purpose, but just hadn't been attacked or wanted to advance further.

By the I was finally attacked, as SD's (custom) Aragorn clove through my ranks near and then in my Start Zone, hurting my army badly, although I fought back. Finally we made a treaty and I moved Motley Max and others into SDs area, where he was fighting K.'s martial artists (who ironically SD hand lent him the figures for--being a former member of the Inner Circle of C3V, he owns most of the VC Custom recommended figures, and has been great in distributing some of them to the rest of us).

Finally, our time was running out, as TW had to leave soon for his long return drive back upstate. Two of us were now eliminated from the game. We hadn't determined how points would be scored. I would win if we did full card scoring; Thrasher would win if we did the partial card scoring favored by the new AOA rules. So it was declared a tie between the two of us, since that scoring decision had not been made before the game started.

Like our last recent games on this map, these were wide ranging plays, with dozens of figures on the battlefield. One person could not take in all of its different actions on so many sectors. So others are welcome to add their own perspectives on these games.

Well met!

Thanks to chas for hosting us once again in a fun-filled afternoon and evening! And great meeting the new guy (Emperor?).

Anticipating team games, but fearing we might not play a second, I played my second, stronger army first.

Earth
140 Master Win Chiu Woo
130 Master Lao Xin
90 Chen Tang
70 Zhen Yuan
70 Lee Jun
500 points, 5 spaces

Feylund
150 WoA x 3
140 Racheim
110 Brunak
100 Syvarris
500 points, 14 spaces

As Sherman marched through the center of the map, I started a slow roll. After setting up my own screen, and including a few of Sherman's non-Orc melee units, I brought up Syvarris with Brunak. But Taeblewalker's Ninjas slipped through and hurt him badly, and he eventually died from inactivity. By that time Racheim was king of the board . . .

My "martial artists" were intended for a team game and, for various reasons, were woefully ineffective in the second game free for all. Anything I might say would sound like sour grapes, so . . .

Finally, on a happier note, Sherman presented me with a custom figure and card as a belated birthday present.

Every aspect of this card reflects my demonstrated gameplay preferences (except perhaps being an ape, LOL). It's a wonderful present! I'll find a way to play him next month for sure.

Thanks, Sherm!

Find The History of the NYCG4

I just made a new update to our Original Post, which is now over 90 pages upthread. I have continued to update the OP of this thread about once a year, with short notes on major milestones. This thread was started in 2013. Back then it looked like the group was about to end what was already a long run, but that didn't happen I'm glad to say. So if you are interested in the history of this gang and its members, you can see some of it up front! All of the original four members had something to say on subsequent posts too. I mention this for newcomers, since adding to an existing thread does not trigger a notification of a new post for others.

Its rather amazing that we've stayed together this long with the same four people (and now two more). Unlike most Scapers who play tournament type two player maps, we do our own large group games on big maps, usually 20 x 30 hexes or so, although I also do two player games on smaller maps when others want to drop by in addition to or instead of our regular monthly games detailed here.

***

I've been Scaping since Heroscape first came out in 2004. I've now played through the scenarios myself in the AOA Battle Box (chronologically first in the Lore) and the AOA Master Set. I'm continuing to play through the Free Online Monthly Scenarios. I've made up threads here for each of these two series. Since I'm not on any social media, I do all of my writing about Heroscape here, although I also post on www.boardgamegeek.com on Scape and the many other board games I play.

***

You can also see many posts all over the site from all of us group members. Sherman Davies used to be a member of the C3V Inner Circle, and is very knowledgeable about Scape rules and card design. He's the fastest map builder I've ever seen, and designs many for our group games. SD is also well known for his own Lord of the Rings and Marvel and DC Supers customs. Kolakoski and I have seperate threads for our own scenarios. K. has also had his own figure of Serpentfolk Kha accepted into the Soldiers of Valhalla. Taeblewalker has many posts on his own map designs, and is active with Heroes of Fiction. TW and I have playtested for C3V and C3G, and I had some influence on two C3G cards myself. Thrasher Darkrai has the most complete collection of Scape including AOA of all of us. You can find some of his newer posts in many of the AOA Unit Books. And Emperor has just joined the site, after discovering the recent Renegade Revival of Scape.

Enjoy! Hope to see your own posts here, and around the site too.

Well met!

Thrasher sent us his scenario for May:

Armies

Players will draft 600-point, 24 figure armies and bring them to gameday. Classic/VC/AoA units are allowed; normal points (no Delta).

If exactly five players are in the game, the host will bring 2 armies and play them on the same team. Otherwise, the game will be a free-for-all. [Subject to change.]

Objective

At the end of the game, be the army with the most points. Destroying or wounding opposing figures, as well as destroying destructible objects (see below) will earn players points. By implication, this means we’re using partial card scoring; I’ll keep track of points throughout the game, so don’t worry on that front. The game will continue until one army remains or until 10 rounds elapse.

Special rules

Littered throughout the map are various types of glaciers/rock formations. Unlike a normal game of Heroscape, these count as destructible objects; anything that can’t impact the Fortress Door (i.e. instant destruction powers or powers that hinge on a unit’s size) cannot affect these destructible glaciers. Destroying them will earn players points just as if they wounded/destroyed a figure (note that, unlike with figures, whomever lands the final hit on a glacier gets all the points). At risk of stating the obvious, these glaciers are considered destructible objects for the purposes of all army card powers. Final stats for the glaciers (including defense, any defensive powers, and points) will be posted in the thread at a later date, but preliminarily:

1-hex glaciers: 20 points.
3-hex glaciers: 50 points.
4-hex glaciers: 100 points.
6-hex glaciers: 150 points.

Preliminarily, I've created two armies for this that can be found here. Note that I have eschewed the Greater Ice Elemental, Ice Troll Berserkers, and Microcorp Troopers.

The date for Thrasher Darkrai's May game is now set for Sunday May 25. Despite all the destructible Glaciers, he says there will be less snow on this map then on his last one. Since its a freebuild that he'll do here a day or two before the Game Date, we might as well go ahead and build our armies like Kolakoski has done above.
