Basic Side Army Card
Spoiler Alert!

Character Bio:
The hives of the Skordyre are tightly organized. Each hatchling is assessed as they grow and assigned a role that ideally suits both their abilities and the needs of the hive. Some tend the rhinabug cattle, some maintain the tunnels, but many of the bug-folk become soldiers.

Thyraxis was highly placed, even among the prestigious warrior caste. She was assigned her own rhinabug, entrusted with its care, and elevated to the rank of Dragoon.

Alongside her fellow elites, Thyraxis was tasked with guarding the tunnels while the Queen and her people hibernated. That is the last she remembers of her home: standing at her post, watching. Then came a horrible, all-consuming sound. Then nothing.

Now her chittering bellows of rage echo across Valhalla without end. Somehow, even in this distant land, she will find her revenge for the cowardly slaughter of her hive.

MADDENING CHITTER
Once per round, before taking a turn with the Thyraxis Dragoon, you may choose an enemy figure within 6 clear sight spaces of Thyraxis and roll the 20-sided die. If you roll a 14 or higher, you may look at one unrevealed Order Marker on that figure's Army Card. You may then choose any other figure controlled by the same player and move the Order Marker to that figure's Army Card.

BATTLE FRENZY 16
After attacking with Thyraxis Dragoon, roll the 20-sided die. If you roll a 16 or higher, you may attack again with Thyraxis.

I guess we can kiss Tor-Kul-Na goodbye, at least on any map that isn't perfectly flat. 25 points cheaper, stats near identical, powers even out.

Tor-Kul-Na is definitely better.

As long as he can use his special power, sure. But finding multiple Small or Medium 1-life figures that are adjacent, on the same level, and on a space where he can end his movement is difficult in the Age of Annihilation.

If we’re only talking about AoA then why did you bring up TKN in the first place? There is no point comparing how the Dragoon and TKN do into the AoA-only meta, because by definition, any AoA-only meta is not going to include TKN (or Nagrubs, for that matter) in the first place.

TKN is better than the Dragoon in a classic-inclusive meta because Trample Stomp allows him to regularly kill 2+ squad figures per turn, but they’re not that far off in viability. I’d say TKN is a B+ unit, while the Thyraxis Dragoon is probably B rank, maybe low B+ rank at best.

Sorry, I didn't mean AOA-only, I meant AOA-Inclusive. If Wraithriders and Dreadnauts are available, we must assume some people will choose them. Unless they are already wounded, these squad figures cannot be destroyed by Trample Stomp.

Pretty compelling- The unit is good enough that unlike, say, Dund, you aren't too devastated if you don't bump off an order marker, but if you do its very nice icing on the cake, though I do wish you could only successfully do it once per round, as opposed to only attempt it once per round, but perhaps that was too strong.

This doesn't have anything to do with the Thyraxis Dragoon's viability per se, but Renegade actually appears to be making a minor (but notable!) sculpting change. Originally, the Thyraxis Dragoon's middle four limbs splayed outwards, extending over neighboring hexes in a way that could have potentially caused placement issues. You can see this in the Haslab promotional photo in Orgsbane's OP, but it's even more obvious in photos from Avalon Hill's 2022 NYCC exhibit (look at the far left of the middle shelf):

Obviously, nobody (except Renegade staffers) has the actual Thyraxis Dragoon sculpt yet, but Renegade appears to have slightly changed it. More specifically, they've tucked the Rhinabug's four middle limbs inwards, likely obviating whatever Stinger Denial possibilities the original sculpt raised. See the image, linked below, from the Thyraxis Dragoon's Character Bio:

Renegade has actually made minor changes to a few of the AoA sculpts, a few of which no one (at least to my knowledge) has commented on. Most are innocuous - one of Xenithrax's arms has slightly changed position, while Sonlen has lost his giant Ullar banner - although not all of them are; Xiamara no longer holds her amulet, contradicting both her card art and her primary power (which still references the now-nonexistent amulet). But credit's due where credit's due: this change actually seems like a good one, provided it actually translates to the physical model. At worst, it's totally innocuous; at best, it'll make the figure easier to place on the board.

All the sculpts from the campaign were prototypes. Retooling is common for several reasons, it could just be to make the figure sturdier on the base.

Oh, certainly. I think that Renegade themselves even singled out the prototype blimp sculpt as something they were likely to change for exactly the reason you state (I want to say in a late 2023 stream?). I just find these sorts of physical sculpt changes fascinating in the context of Heroscape, a game system whose uniqueness stems from its physicality (figures actually having to fit on a given tile to end their movement there is something that's pretty unique to Heroscape, for instance); changing a figure's sculpt, in that context, can have small, but meaningful, gameplay effects.

Oh, I agree. Xenithrax for example, in my opinion, is a sculpt that didn't seem to take that into account. I definitely don't mind small changes that aren't the most aesthetically pleasing if it makes the figure more appropriate for play.
