superfrog's maps -- Cucumber 6/10

Re: superfrog's maps -- Zoom Fatigue and Turmoil 8/10

REALLY like Turmoil! Looks like a tournament staple at first glance...but I'll have to play on it and let ya know ;)

Re: superfrog's maps -- Zoom Fatigue and Turmoil 8/10

Two good looking maps!

For pink starting zone on turmoil, I'm concerned you're overly incentivised to go to the right. Have you found this to be an issue?

Re: superfrog's maps -- Zoom Fatigue and Turmoil 8/10

When I saw the name "Zoom Fatigue" I expected to see a pile of tiny, broken computer screens as a piece of custom terrain. :)

There’s a couple things that I hoped would encourage you to go left. The level 4 space is slightly closer from the left, and definitely closer to threaten. The left side also has road that lets you counter either a left play or a right play from your opponent. And lastly I think threatening the glyph and grabbing the edge height is easier on the left side.

All that said I think the right side may still be stronger, definitely something I’m going to look for as I play it more.

Re: superfrog's maps -- Zoom Fatigue and Turmoil 8/10

I agree there is easier development to height initially from the right...but this map is low enough and flat enough it doesn’t cause too many issues or concerning advantages by developing right. I also agree the left has plenty of reasons to go that way as well.

Played this map 2X now and really loved how it played.

Superfrog, just a wee note here to say, I think your Styx and Stones is a masterpiece — and my favorite among the ScapeCon map contest submissions. :toast:

New Blog Entry for making maps that don't suck :)

Also new map dropping here tomorrow, called Wingspan. Discord has already seen it :)

I just read that blog entry. Seriously, one of the single best cartographic posts I've ever seen. Distills so many principles down into easily-understandable tips.
YES!

Completely agreed. Excellent job SF!

Re: superfrog's maps -- Zoom Fatigue and Turmoil 8/10

Updates coming to the OP soon (ones in bold have never had build instructions posted anywhere yet, although for some I've shared VS screenshots on discord, and some are playable in my online maps folder).

To add:
Styx and Stones (BftU, VW, FotA)
Jabberwock (ScapeCon Edition) (2 BftU, TJ)
Reclamation (BftU, SotM, FotA)
Wingspan (BftU, SotM, TJ)
Arboretum (RotV, RttFF, TJ)
Burnout (formerly Zoom Fatigue) (RotV, RttFF, VW)
Turmoil (v1.2) (BftU, SotM, RttFF)
Nordheim (BftU, FotA, TT)
By Babylon's Rivers (v2) (SotM, FotA)
Map I Haven't Named Yet (SotM, FotA, TJ)
Pure Gold (2 BftU, RttFF)

Got a few others I've made recently that I may or may not post eventually, just gotta make it through this backlog first :)

I also noticed I have a bit of a series going with Turmoil, Reclamation, and Wingspan. Might have to finish that one off with a BftU/SotM/TT and a BftU/SotM/VW.

And I think some prioritizing is going to have to take place in my OP with so many maps now....

I really like the looks of Wingspan. And great aesthetics too. (Always important!)

Still working on posting these eventually, just got Turmoil in.

Got a few more to add to the list as well:

Gradient (2 M:tCB, 2 TT)
Tendril (M:tCB, BftU, VW, FotA)
Freezer Burn (RotV, VW, TT)

I was mentioning to @GameBear earlier that I think we're living in a renewed golden age of 'Scape cartography, such as we haven't seen in almost a decade — and your maps are a big part of that. :toast:

Re: superfrog's maps -- Freezer Burn 2/7/22

Freezer Burn build instructions. It uses 1 RotV, 1 VW, and 1 TT, with 2 random glyphs.

Mmmm, I like the looks of Freezer Burn. Great judicious use of ice to cover up some of the lava field (many lava maps use too much of it). And no honkin' big 6-hex glacier either. I like the interplay between the LVL4 snow and lava too.

Has a slight rightward pull? — going right offers faster access to both the glyph and LVL3 lava. Although I'm not as concerned as some people are about stronger pull to one side or the other in a map.

Re: superfrog's maps -- Sunken 3/1/22

Sunken build instructions. It uses 1 SotM, 1 FotA, and 1 TJ, with 2 random glyphs.

Have had this in my OP for a bit but never featured it outside the spoilers, so here it goes for some more eyes on it :)

I’ve played on Freezer Burn a lot and like it quite a bit, but it does definitely pull to the right. I’d move the glyph a spot (maybe even two spots) closer to the left start zone and probably reconfigure the level 3 snow around the glyph so that it favors the left side more. Maybe change more in those glyph areas with those changes. It is great the level 3 snow is 6 spaces away from the level 3 ice in the middle, that’s been fun in my games on it. The rest of the map is great, I’d just change the glyph area so it favors the left side of the start zone more.

Re: superfrog's maps -- Sunken 3/1/22

Haven't had time to feature this in my OP but I have an updated version of Styx and Stones that's being used this season in OHS. I'm quite proud of it, check it out below:

A fine map, but I don't feel that 14 shadow spaces is enough. Can you please try to squeeze a few more out of the set? Thank you. :p

Re: superfrog's maps -- Sunken 3/1/22

Two submissions for this year's ScapeCon Map Contest:

unknown.png

Phalanx build instructions. It uses 1 RotV + ladders and battlements, with 2 random glyphs.
(online board)

Slalom build instructions. It uses 1 SotM, 1 TT, and 1 TJ + ladders and battlements, with 2 random glyphs.

Blackberry build instructions. It uses 2 M:tCB and 2 RttFF, with 2 random glyphs.

Thanks to @MegaSilver for the set combo request and @GameBear for suggesting some helpful tweaks.
