Repaints by eternaldream (Beware! Pic Heavy!)

Hello everyone! What attracted me to Heroscape was the simplicity of the gameplay. Before that I was into Warhammer. It was because of Warhammer that I learned to paint miniatures. My problem with the game is that I didn't really like the rules. The battles were too drawn out, and I hardly ever got to play. I was a bit hesitant to get into another miniature game, but Heroscape's compact, yet in depth rules won me over.

Although the figures came prepainted, they still weren't up to the quality I experienced from Warhammer figures sculpt-wise and paint-wise. However, once I actually started to paint them, I noticed that the figures are actually much more detailed than they appear. I'm goint to work on repainting every single figure in my collection, and I'll post some pretty pictures for you all here. I just got a new camera too with a Macro lens, and I've been dying to try it out.

First off a question: Would it be better to put all the pictures in the first post? Or would it be better to make them in multiple posts, and link to them via this post?

Also, feel free to drool.

I'll start off with some of my favorite figures: the vampires!

First off is Cyprien. He has such a fantastic sculpt, so I had fun painting him. The biggest change I did was to add gold trim on his armor. It really adds a lot to the figure, and makes him look a lot more menacing (as he should be).

My biggest problem with Iskra is that she doesn't have any armor on. There wasn't as much detail on her torso as a result, so it kind of looks a little bare. I tried to add some gold trim and gold buckles to help her fit in with her parents.

Sonya is my favorite sculpt out of all of the vampires. I did the same thing on her armor as Cyprien, so they look really great as a couple.

I had a lot of fun with Marcu. As you see, I added a lot of new details to him with the blue pulsating veins. I don't really like his pose, or his sculpt that much. There wasn't enough detail in it for the drybrushing to bring out, so that's why I decided to plug in some extra attention grabbing details. As a habbit (or complusion), whenever I see too much empty space on a miniature, I have to fill it in with some artificial texture or detail. Wait until you see my Marro...

I layered the blue veins so they gradually get lighter higher up. I think I spend more time on the miniatures I don't like, so they will look better. The veins sure make him look pretty unstable, ready to turn on you any moment.

I gave the Rechets a gargoyle kind of look to them, with duller brown colors. The spine on their back is a more subtle grey, which looks more stony. I might redue their stinger tails later, because they don't look as deadly (I'm hoping that if I paint a figure well, then they'll perform better in battle. A superstition shared by many miniature painters...)

Aren't they one big happy family? With each group of figures I paint, I try not to deviate much from the original colors. That is unless the original colors are absolutely horrible (I'm looking at you Nakita Agents).

Anyway, the next figures I'm working on are the elves from wave 8. After that, who knows? Please tell me what you think. I can try to take requests if you would like to see a particular figure painted. I have everything but wave 4 so far.

Until next time...

Sick repaints! I love what you brought to these figures, can't wait to see more! Do you have any others ready for release?

Awesome job! +Rep coming your way. I like the Retchets the most. Im looking forward to seeing more.

Ah, good use of colours. I like what you did with the armor and the wings on the rechets. Well done.

I love the way Cyprien and his kin look after your repaint! I also like how you show the close up of the figures faces in your pictures. It really highlights how good your work is. Great job.

Pay? Hmm? Well if you want... Though I'd much rather trade. Right now I'm looking for a Laglor, and all of wave 4. If anybody wants to work out a deal you can PM me.

 You've got a real talent with paints, eternaldream! I look forward to seeing more of your repainted figs. ;)

Thanks a lot. Actually I only started playing Warhammer earlier this year, so I don't have that much experience painting miniatures. I do have a background in art that helps though.

As promised, here are the elves! I threw in Kyntela Gwyn in there too just because I had the model. I'm still waiting to get my Morsbane and Acolarh.

First up is Emirroon. He was very fun to paint because his regular paint job wasn't that great. I kept the same basic scheme, but I made his armor a different color, and colored the trim in the middle.

Chadris was fun to paint too. He also had plenty of detail that went unnoticed. I wanted to do a fire effect with the paint, to make it appear that the fireball is a source of light. However, I'm not that good yet.

Arkmer is my favorite figure of the bunch. He has a great pose, and plenty of detail. I dulled him down from what he was, because he was way too loud. I was thinking of painting all the elves similar colors, but I decided that I liked their individuality better.

Not much to say. Very simple paint job for a simple figure.

This was my least favorite of the bunch. I'm not sure if I just got a bad figure, or if they are all like this. I had a very hard time defining her face, because it looked just like a blob. I had to do a little reconstructing to get it look human (or elvish). My favorite part are the pink belts (girl power!)

I never liked painting horses in Warhammer because they tend to look too plain. Their bodies are usually devoid of much texture, so there's not much you can pull out of them without painting your own. Ulginesh's redeeming feature is the wings on the pegasus. I tried to layer the colors a bit more gradually, which was pretty easy because the feathers were layered themselves. You'll see a close up below with me experimenting with my macro lens. You can get REALLY close...

Go Go Power Ran... Oh... that's not it. Group shot! One thing I did to try to unify the elves was to give them all yellowish hair. I guess I'm a stickler for tradition, but I think it also makes them look like they belong while still keeping their individual fashion choices.

I'm not that good...

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

These are some of the most amazing customs I've ever seen! Amazing detail on these and the vampires. +Rep, and once I can, I'll rep you again! Wow!

I suck at painting. I suck at painting. I suck at painting. Yes, yes, and yes.

Like I said before, good feel for colour. The importance of a good colour scheme is often underestimated.

I think the humanoids would look even better if you could tone down the puppet-stare. There shouldn't be white all around the pupils. Easiest way to do this would be to first slightly enlarge the pupils (somewhat tricky but you've got a steady hand, I know you can do this) and then redefine the eye by painting (a darker shade of) your skin colour, shaving off some of the top and bottom of the eyeball.
You also fell for the old shading-fire-the-wrong-way-round scheme. Real fire burns hot inside and is cooler on the outside. So shading and highlights should be inversed. bright in the recesses and darker on top. Don't feel bad about this though, 90% of all mini painters do this wrong untill someone points it out to them. It's sort of a blind spot.

The Retchets are great.
The vampire weapons look as if they are made of stone; I am no painter, but it would be cool to make them appear razor sharp.
I definitely want to see those Marro.
