Well met!

Cleon's latest map gave rise to this post.

Uses 1 SotM, 1 RttFF.

I've never played on a map this small. For The Magnificent Ronin, and similar drafting scenarios, I suggested a couple of small maps.

Yar's Revenge:

Quicksilver Fane:

For The Power Cosmic!, I'm tentatively using

Echidna's Garden by All_Your_Pie.

For this last, I cannot imagine playing it on a much smaller map. But for a "normal" game, with two full 24 hex Start Zones, how small is too small? How big is too big? Does it matter if it's heroes only? Or C3G?

It depends on how you play the game. Most modern competitive maps seem to fall in the range of 160-230 playable hexes. Competitive maps, when they have them, usually place their glyphs 7-10 normal move spaces away from the front line of the SZ's, which also affects their size.

If you play the game differently, a different size/style might suit you better. I love making/playing on competitive maps, but I do enjoy throwing together the occasional epic, fill-the-entire-table maps as well! I'm not sure how differently C3G plays compared to regular Heroscape, but it's very possible that meta calls for bigger, wider maps.

I would say the opposite. Smaller maps with cool terrain.

The Gang now has five regular players. Up until recently, I prepared scenarios for six players, with one of us fielding two armies. The Power Cosmic! is a free for all for up to six players. We generally eschew the glyphs included with the maps. Treasure glyphs (Brandar's Chests) are substituted and/or added as additional sources of Victory Points.

My take on C3G maps is that, with the platforms, they often favor flyers, which is why I've rejected them out of hand. I'd say 90% of the maps I've actually used are by Dignan or Flash_19. Epic maps have generally lead to epic maneuvering before contact, and epic room to run or turtle, leading to epic boredom.
