HolyDiver's Heroscape League

Hello! I wanted to share with you all the way I've been playing Heroscape lately.
I am significantly more into this game than any of my friends, and they frequently complain that it's not fair to play against me because I have every unit I own basically memorized so I know far better than them what works and what doesn't.
Because of that, my goal was to create a bunch of pre-built 400 point armies so that anybody could pick one and play with it and have a strong synergistic army with a reasonable chance at beating any other.

Because I'm me and I'm a bit obsessive, I decided to make a whole League with these armies and pit them against each other in tournaments, updating the rosters and adding new armies as the AoA units come out and as I go back and collect more VC units.

I welcome suggestions for how to tweak my armies! I'm running classic points. I also do not have more than 1 copy of most common squads. I have in my collection basically one of everything from Classic Scape, plus a few random selections of DnD and VC.

Here is the link to the Google Sheet where I'm keeping track of everything. The first sheet has the rosters and current scorecard. The numbered sheets show the results of each tournament. Then I have my FUTURE tab where I have changes planned out with all the upcoming units.

As we're playing though these I'll post battle reports occasionally. I'll also let you know of the progression of each tournament, and update the rosters as new figures come out.

I hope you all enjoy!

The first battle report I wanted to share is Scouts v Gladiators, wherein I discovered just how INSANE the Venoc Vipers really can be. Gladiators at the time had a squad of Ashigaru Harquebus instead of the Izumi Samurai. This battle is part of what made me switch.

ROUND 1:

This round is mostly setup. Zetacron advances and snipes one of the Ashigaru, and hits Spartacus for 2 damage. The gladiators make it to Zetacron, but only manage to do a single damage. The round ends with the Venoc Vipers advancing, but their attack is ineffective... for now.

ROUND 2:

The scouts win initiative, and the Vipers attack. on the VERY first roll of the round, Viper #1 rolls 3 skulls against Spartacus' 0 shields and he falls. Viper #2 kills a Capuan. Viper #3 kills a Capuan. They roll for Frenzy... and succeed! They continue to roll 2-3 skulls with every single attack, and get a kill every single time. The amount of luck the Vipers have for this battle is astonishing. They successfully hit Frenzy 3 times in a row, and the match ends.

Turn 1, round 2, the Vipers already win. In a single turn, the Venocs kill 3 Ashigaru, all 6 Capuans, and deal 3 damage to finish off Spartacus. I never saw their value much before this, saw them as a fun novelty but now? Now I'm a believer.

Queen of the Dead defeat both I Am Spartacus and Valiant to advance!

The Crypt Guardians are simply brutal units. If you don't have a special attack or some auto wound ability they are nearly impossible to stop. In this last fight against Valiant the 4th Massachusetts were able to snipe Sudema relatively early. The knights engaged the mummies hoping to overwhelm them, and we entered an absolute slug fest, both sides hammering at each to minimal effect. Unfortunately for the knights, a couple of them died early on so numbers were no longer in their favor, and they simply could not break through the mummies' defenses. The fact that they had to roll 2 skulls to even have a chance at wounding the mummies proved insurmountable.

In this tournament, Queen of the Dead will now fact the loser of Beastly v Johnny and the Dwarves in the losers finals.

Beastly Wins the Third Tournament!

In the Winners' bracket finals, Johnny and the Dwarves defeats Beastly to knock them down into the Losers' finals. Queen of the Dead unfortunately found their Achilles' heel in the special attacks of Beastly. The combination of Onshu's Sonic Blast and Ewashia's Twister made short work of the mummies, and without their support, Queen Sudema fell quickly.

Beastly had lost to Johnny and the Dwarves before, and would have to beat them twice in a row to win the crown, and honestly, I'm DELIGHTED they were able to do it. Otar (C3V) is an amazing little unit. He killed his points worth in every match, and Gore and Toss is a great way to get enemies into position, either to arrange for an attack from height from the Arrow Gruts, or to move enemies into position to get hit with Twister or Soul Fury. I wanted to take a moment to point out that he is one of only 3 units for 50 points or less that have both multiple life AND 4 attack. The other two are Marcu Esenwein (A tier) and Brave Arrow (B tier). The bottom line is Otar is by definitely the best bonding option for the Dryan right now, and I wanna see him moved up and out of C-! I think once Halushia comes out this army is really going to find its footing and become an even stronger army.

All three of these armies have changes on the horizon.

Queen of the Dead:
Dropping Warden 816 and one Crypt Guardian for Queen Qhyrion and a Drow Chainfighter. This will make the army even slower, but I'll be glad to have another source of damage besides relying fully on Sudema. I'm nervous about dropping a Guardian though, they are the army core and after learning how fragile they are to special attacks, I'm nervous about them getting killed off early. We'll have to see though, I'm very excited about the new Queen.

Johnny and the Dwarves:
Swapping out Dorim the Bulklhead Brawler for Ulfrid Hornwrangler (C3V). I might be alone in this, but I haven't been impressed with Dorim so far. Charge doesn't feel worth it if I'm not running multiple squads of Axegrinders (Which I would love to do if they weren't about $5,000 a squad). Ulfrid has a lot more durability than Dorim does, which is another problem I have with Dorim, and Grim Determination is an amazingly cool special attack, one that will give Johnny and the Dwarves some much needed offensive power.

My Wave 2 preorder finally shipped, so in the next few days I'll get to start playing with the new Kyrie and Eisenek, and prepping for the next tournament! I have very high hopes. I have a number of new/changing armies coming, as I'm also getting Ashi-Dhulu (SoV) and a second squad of Grok Riders.
For the Pirates army, I'm dropping Killian Vane III (who simply has not carried his weight in any game) for Glinerva, who can hopefully give them the protection from range they need.

As always, I welcome suggestions!
