Format idea for next Gencon

I heard about a nice format on french forums and I think it could apply very well to Gencon and its limited time.

Both player takes 2 armies.

D20 roll:
1-10 players play with player A armies, and player B choose which army to play with.
11-20 players play with players B armies, and player A choose which army to play with.

Pros:
Taking OP armies doesn't help you
Taking unbalanced armies will disavandtage you
All machups between good players will be balanced
Doesn't take much time for selection as opposed to "Bring2" or "Cut the Cake"
You will mostly have to know to play with a lot of armies to win, and to master the machup between yours. No one trick poney stuff.
No problem with guys taking too strong or too weak armies in Reverse The Whip.
No bad machup luck problem

Cons:
Always the same machups
Takes sightly more time than RtW

I think it could be a nice in-between RtW (and its problems we all know) and Cut The Cake (takes too much time for Gencon).

I'll most likely never participate in Gencon, just throwing this to you.

What do you think?

One concern the Gencon guys have is that someone will bring intentionally super crappy armies (Isamu vs. Otonashi, for example). This is a total nonissue in Bring 2 because you just end up playing the other guy's armies every time, but it's potentially an issue in a format like this, where you could force the other person to play a fake game. (Of course, all you really do by doing that is screw yourself, as your opponent gets Isamu against your Otonashi. But the Gencon organizers are concerned that someone would do it just to ruin things for everyone. You know, kind of like how people still play Q9, except without the competitive rationale.)

As far as the time factor goes: I've played Bring 2 (several variants) in live play many, many times. I've never had army selection take more than 4-5 minutes. Well... OK, one time, but that was against a local player who is the slowest player I've ever played with (and even then it involved customs, where he was reading every card). All in all I don't think this format is a huge advantage over regular bring2 in terms of time saved, nor is it that much worse than a "kill 'em all" event. An insanely slow player will be insanely slow no matter the format. Stating a clear time limit on army choice (your opponent can decide for you after that time expires?) seems like an OK thing to do if we're concerned about it.

We've now had a bring 2 event at the last two Gencons. I don't think that more games have gone to time in that format when compared to others; do the organizers have any sense to the contrary? For my part, none of my nine Gencon take 2 games have gone to time. But I can only think of one Gencon game of mine in the last two years that has gone to time for me. Any slow players who have played Gencon take 2 want to give their experience with it? Looking in your direction @infectedsloth ;)

Maybe after 10 years of a main event that last 2 days, we just go with a regular lineup of single day events. That way there is no one event that has any more prestige or attention than any other. Perhaps then there will be less desire and discussion to change 1 event out of a 12-14 event lineup.

Would it make you feel better if I pitched changes to six or seven events Rÿ?

I'm no longer in control of it, so pitch away.

I am simply stating what I have been for years - too much weight and attention is given to this one event, even from people who have never been and will never go. It is baffling to me.

I'm just giving you some ideas Rÿchean, I just thought this format can be interesting for this event with limited time, because I know RtW does not make the unanimity that was just a random thought. OR maybe I'm not up to date and it does make the unanimity, I don't know.

Otherwise I don't care much about Gencon to be honest, it's more of a meeting between fans than anything else, especially now that there is Online Heroscape.

That new avatar is is freaking great Rychean.
It makes your posts a little more intimidating. Not sure if that is what you were going for?

Thanks! I didn't think about it that way, but I see what you mean. That old avatar just wasn't me anymore. I no longer sport the goatee, I have grayed quite a bit in 9 years and I was tired of looking bewildered all the time, even if that is my constant mental state.

I would love to see a 1,000 pt army event next year - I could see it as only half could be squads. But there are so many great army builds with leaders that would be great to see this play out - sure it would take longer, but who cares.

That is my dream for HS at GC next year.

Ry - call something a Nat. Championship and it takes on a life of its own I guess. Why would it not be consider more important then the other smaller tourneys. To me it takes on less importance the year it changed from the 24 starting spot - but that is just for me I am sure.

Those are the reasons why I volunteer to work the check-in/results table during the Championship. People were/are taking it too serious for me to enjoy playing in the Championship any more (not that I ever did very well anyway).

But it isn't called that. It's been called Main Event or Championship, not national anything; it has never has been called national anything. People have called it that around here but I can never understand why, there is no qualifier, no regional, no nothing. You just have to have a badge and a ticket.

But, yes, I see your point - if you call something the main event or championship at the 4-day con, it will carry more weight than the other 10-12 events at THAT Con.

and it is the only 2 day event for GC, so you do need to Qualify to get into the championship round. OK, my ba I added on National, it is just the GenCon Championship.
