Marro Warriors Tactics
I want to love these guys as much as everyone else likes them, and on paper they look great (especially for their price), but somehow whenever I play with them are ineffective and die quickly.
What tactics do you use when playing with the Marro Warriors? |

1-Get 2 warriors in water.
2-Send the other 2 to attack 3-when attackers are dead, clone with 2 water warriors 4-repeat ![]() |

I should've titled this thread "The Marro Warriors suck!" That would've gotten me more response :P

I will usually hold one back and send 3 out to attack since you get more use out of each Order Marker. They are one of the better units in the game for only 50 points.

I like the Marro Warriors as well. They seem to perform best later in the game after the initial big units have been killed off. Position them with some height and they can be very effective for 50 points.

A ranged unit of four for 50 points is great regardless of stats. If they had 3 attack I'd call them one of the better units in the game, but still (with 6 move and 6 range) they are an effective run-and-gun squad as some can lay down cover while others scramble for height/glyphs.
You should try keep one out of the action, preferably in water but that may not always be out of the way. Don't bother cloning until you've suffered two loses, and try not to loose three, as then you’re looking at two turn markers to get em back to full efficiency. The marro warriors are an excellent squad, but they are not omnipotent. I have had them win a game on more than one occasion, but I've also had them get wiped out really quickly. Just keep playing them and you'll find a time when they shine. And don't worry about all the tactics: in fact, I usually move and fire with them as a squad. four ranged attacks from height can be very effective, and because you can move and clone, you usually can reatreat with one of them out of range and go for a land based clone. This can get tricky, though and you often just let the last one die, rather than take a chance on cloning them.
They are a lot of fun, though. Especially if you take a full squad back from one warrior. It really annoys your opponent. For instance, I used them in a recent game against an army of Anubian Wolves: They were very effective early on taking out two or three wolves from range on the first round. After I lost two of them, I kept one in water and sent the other in the thick of battle, but didn't use him much because I had bonding with my Sacred Band. After Parmenio was killed, though, I was down to one marro (and some Samauri Archers), and I put all my markers on the last Marro. By the time the wolves were in range, I had cloned my entire squad back and was taking shots at him from the water (4 spaces of water). That's when he got me, though, rolling a 20 for his unleashed fury, he tore up 3 of my 4 marros, and I decided it wasn't worth it to try to clone any more. I ended up losing the game when my two squads of samauri archers got whipped by his snipers. In any case, he worked really hard to kill those first three marros the first time, and it was great to see his face when I brought them all back to life! |

Be sure to note that if you want to use Water Clone, none of the Warriors can attack, and only ONE may clone that turn.
I am amazed to see that no one has misspelled 'marro' yet. Despite the fact that it is written on numerous cards, people still managed to get it wrong. In such a case, I will retreat, bewilderded, into the crawl space. I've seen everything from "marrow" to "moro" to even "omfg lolzor t3h m4220 lol!!" I give each and every one of you a hearty pat on the back for displaying what used to be competence, which is now called intelligence. |

Maybe someone can explain to me how cloning really works in a competitive game. In my experience, spending a turn marker to clone only puts me a turn behind whatever else I should be doing. Don't most of you find, as I do, that my opponent can usually kill 'em faster than I can clone 'em? Or, if they're behind the lines, that you lose more by spending a turn cloning than you gain from the potential extra fig(s)?
~Aldin, who can maybe, on a big map, in a good defensive posture, against an opponent without the ability to strike multiple units per turn, just possibly, see cloning as a good use of a turn marker |
