Oh, I have those ones! Do you recommend I read them? I just have so many DL books, I don't know what to read, but I have heard many good things about War of Souls!

Yes, they are a must read in my opinion. The whole story is just greatly crafted.

The original trilogy was a fun romp, but the War of the Twins was much better IMO. I couldn't tell you which books I read and which I didn't, but I definitely remember those two trilogies.

Yes, the Twins books were GREAT! I also agree that the original trilogy is a good read, but mostly just nostalgia...not a greatly crafted story, in my humble opinion.

I love the original trilogy. We just finished making up Tanis as part of the Heroes of Fiction project.

I've only read the original trilogy. Loved it except for the ending. Felt like good never triumph over evil, it just put evil on a set back. But that's just me.

I loved the original trilogy, the War of the Twins, and the... I forget the name, the trilogy set in the middle of the original trilogy.

As for the ending, you have to understand the book's perspective, which was almost Taoist; they seemed to believe that too much goodness is actually harmful (and that the Cataclysm was caused by too much goodness), and so they would take it as a triumph that the balance between good and evil was once again righted in the world.

Of course, this balance of good and evil belief is wrong, and I agree it made for a slightly-less-than-satisfying ending.

Re: Dragonlance Anyone?

I love most of the books in the Dragonlance series. There is well over a hundred books in the series not including the RPG explansions. I have over 80 of the books myself.

I actually got my 1st editions of the original trilogy signed by Weiss and Hickman at GenCon in 2010. They were both extremely friendly and open for conversation. My 1st editions are more than 20 years old and in ridiculous good condition - no damage to the cover or pages and no visible creases on the spine. They were quite amazed at how good the books looked.

Little know fact about Dragonlance: Most of the original characters were written up as RPG characters first with just a name and inital stats. They were then handed to Weiss and Hickman to flesh out. Weiss's favorite character, and the one she developed the most, is Raistlin. The gold skin, hourglass eyes, and tense love/hate relationship with Caramon are all her ideas.

Hm...I could be wrong, but my recollection is that the cataclysm was caused by the hubris of man, specifically the High Priest who, rather than acknowledging the gifts from the gods, began to make *demands* of them. Thus leading to the gods throwing down the skies in a fiery doom sort of way.

Thoughts?

I believe excessive hubris is what really happened but whenever it was brought up in the books it was often cited as a reason good can't be allowed to dominate. Often enough, one sort of evil (the armies of Takhisis) is defeated, only to be replaced by a more subtle evil that disguises itself as good. Perhaps that's what the authors were saying when they said that the elimination of Takhisis would be a bad thing.
