Nifty. What game is that guy one the left from? For a moment, I thought he might be Shamus's avatar form, but I don't think that's the case.

When you say 'throw in another deck' do you mean combine a deck with the Tatics deck or play it alone with the first scenario?

I also have been unable to win with the Tactics deck, heck I've been unable to make it past the first stage of the quest even.

I'm onto the Lore deck now and have fared a bit better, making it to the last stage twice, but still having yet to win. I have not combined any decks yet as I'm just trying to see how each one operates alone first.

I mean adding. I for some reason can't get a combined deck to work. I've tried several times but either I suck or I can't get the right cards to draw.

I've played 2 more solo times today with 2 decks, traveling down the Anduin and I'm 0-2. I tried the Healer / Travel combo first and just got pummeled by monsters with very little location cards. The second time I tried the Resource / Military deck and fared much better against the monsters but got bogged down by locations...

Either I suck at this game, it's hard, or I'm just totally missing something.

I can beat the first stage pretty regularly (difficulty is only 1). I've beaten Conflict at Carrock (the trolls) with a luck Gandalf draw at the very right moment (difficulty 7 I think). I've beaten the Anduin Travel one only once and that was with 3 players (Difficulty 4 I think). But other than that I've pretty much lost all the other games and I've played close to 20 (though at least a dozen of those were on the first quest).

I think I must miss something in the deck building aspect. Though I think I build good decks, the cards don't come up when I need them to.

The weird thing is I'm pretty darn good at Death Angel which is supposed to be really hard. I even played the rules wrong the first 6 or so times I played and was playing it a lot harder than it was. But I barely ever play it now since it seems to easy, though I do want to try the new scenario and the new marines that came in the expansion.

The other thing is this LotR LCG doesn't seem to scale well. It gets TONS easier the more players (or decks) you are using. At least in my limited experience. But I keep coming back to play it and am very stoked to get the expansions this CHRISTmas, so it must be doing something right...

Well I hope that you at least substituted some of your extra HeroScape characters for those carboard Gingerman Cookie pawns. having a Wizard, Elf, Dwarf, and Ranger move around the board will subtlely introduce them (even @ 3 & 4) to the World of Gaming with Miniatures and set the stage for when you eventually read them "The Hobbit" as a bedtime story. &obtw: those blue cubes from DBTI will someday make excellent Line-Of-Sight blockers as customized HeroScape terrain pieces . . . ~LOL~ enjoy them kids while you can, too soon they'll be asking for your car keys so they can "Hang out with THEIR friends."

Thunderstone Heart of Doom
Kingdom Builder

Nice delivery by UPS man. I just got my Skyrim for Xbox 360 and Summoner Wars Master set. I'm with you in the "can't I open and play with them now!" category.

Hmmm, "fragile" / "problems" / "high cost" / "cheeziness" / "got gipped"

Thanks Chas, now I'm really glad that I waited. At GenCon, I was intrigued with the several new Space Ship Games and could not decide which one to go with...

A. Star Wars Vehicles - O.K. not new, but it's new to me, still available on eBay, and I had an interesting conversation with some of the Fans who are trying to revitalize it with customized rules and scenarios, the way we HS'ers are keeping our favorite game alive)

B. War Rocket - As an old (very old) Buck Rogers fan, I loved the demo's until I learned that the ships are white metal model kits that need to be assembled and painted ( I just don't have time for that )

C. Battleship Galaxies - imho: overly hyped in the HS community because of the designer's name recognition, but this is one that Hasborg should have mass marketed at every WallyMart and Big Box store to give kids an alternative to the (:gag re-packaged originqal Battleship that I see EVERY where. All of my friends were disappointed after finally getting to play it a few times in Indy IN.

D. StarTrek Fleet Captains - Yes it did look "pretty" at the demo booth, but also overly complex and I knew that back home I'd never get my local family and friends to actually play it.

E. Leviathans - The "MonstersInTheSky" to my knowledge it still has not been released, but at least there were promises of expansions and fixes to the production problems in Aug. My friends were very impressed with this one and encouraged me to also get involved. I don't know if I can get past the Steam-Punk alt. reality theme ( I don't need flying battleships, I'd be happy with WWI dreadnaught scenarios )

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Glad to help out, Johngee. The reason I started a whole long thread on Star Trek Fleet Captains is that I knew that owning it was going to be a whole adventure in board gaming! And there are going to be a whole range of reactions to this game, depending on what you individually want out of it. While the components have problems, especially for the cost, I'm having a really good time playing it, and Taeblewalker gave it a 9 out of 10 after only a few turns of our first game! So I encourage you and others, if you are still interested, to read past that first post, which is only about components, and very negative, and go on to the playing reports, which are very positive!

Therein lies the question about all games. How high does a game have to rate on both physical components and elegance of rules design (and sometimes a few other factors like topic/period 'feel,' although that is really part of the latter) before its a "keeper?" Its easy to rate a game that hits the highest marks in all catagories, but so few do that! I personally am more interested in the design, and will play any game on any topic if its "a good game." These days however, we are spoiled with a very high level of component production, and expect a lot for our hard earned bucks. To buy or not to buy; that is the question!

As for STFC, read on in the thread, and see if it might be for you, or if you might want to try out a copy someone else paid for! With all its component problems, the rules and topic 'feel' are so good that I'm having fun and looking forward to a Romulan expansion!

Of course, I didn't pay full price for it, either...and if someone buys it for you for Christmas RIGHT NOW, you can get it for free...
