Units used: an update.
Posted July 14th, 2009 at 09:17 AM by ollie
There have been a couple of tournaments since my last update. I used Knights, Gilbert and Dupuis at Beantown Beatdown V, giving Jandar and Earth a boost, and Romans, Marcus DG, Ne-Gok-Sa, Me-Burq-Sa and the Airborne Elite at Saratoga Slugfest II, giving a boost to Einar and Utgar and to Earth and Marr. I haven't used any Wave 9 yet, nor any Aquilla. Ne-Gok-Sa brings me one unit closer to using each of the RotV units in tournaments; just Finn, Drake, Carr and Mimring to go.
Here are the tables.

Pretty interesting ollie. I may consider doing something similar.
And I cannot believe you haven't used Carr yet in a tourney! Wow! |

Hi there, Ollie, I've also been thinking to try this out. I have a lot of tournament things and To-Do's for Heroscape so it will be a while, until I get my Heroscape career act together. But it sounds interesting and I like the idea of placing high at tournaments using less competative ones.

Thanks both. You should definitely give it a try. I find it interesting to look at when I'm coming up with new armies. It doesn't skew my army building too much (yet)---as long as there is at least one new unit in any army I use, I'm happy enough.
Carr and Drake will probably feature soon. They're pretty self-reliant so next time I have a reasonable army with 100 or 110 points left to fill, I'll put one of them in. Finn I'm most keen to use in an army alongside Knights and Hawthorne. I've never had much (or indeed any) success with Arrow Grut builds, but I guess I'll have to practise and get Mimring (and Krug and Swogs) onto the list. If a few people start keeping track we can have mini Bingo-like competitions: First to use all of RotV; first to complete a wave; first to use a unit from every small blister pack; first to complete a general or planet;... |

Any Wave 9 units you're itching to add to the list soon or will they have to wait for their time to come around too?
It's interesting that the high win-rate figures don't hold to nearly the same order as the Power Rankings, perhaps how your personal playing style has to do a bit more with competitivity than we realize. |

There are a few Wave 9 units I'm itching to use. Atlaga, the Dividers and Kumiko are probably top of the list. The romans felt like Wave 9 to me too---I got them for the first time with my Wave 9 order. I now have a "complete" collection, for about the weakest definition of complete---each unique (once some Venocs get repainted into Elite Onyx Vipers) and at least two of each common---so I can now, in theory, field any unit I like.
I'm not sure that these tables say that much about the power rankings, for a couple of reasons. First, these numbers are small; any unit can have a good day. Second, the more powerful units (rats and Q9 in particular) are being pressed into action to make weaker units viable. At least one of those two has been in the armies that used Templar Cavalry, Dund, Morsbane, Deathwalker 9000, Zettians, Obsisdians and Warden 816. |

All I'm saying I'm saying is who would imagine Kelda going 5-1 even on one day while a unit like Raelin did 6-2 for her games.
Do some of the tournaments you attend have certain game modifiers that will make you choose certain units that would have otherwise been on the wait list? Like all melee, only x2 of commons, ect. I for one, probably would only ever take the EI if one of those rules where in place. |

Some do, but they're relatively minor usually. For example, Kelda was played in Above Cursed Lands (roll an unblockable attack die for each non-flyer at the end of each round). I do think that Kelda is pretty good though---if it wasn't for Raelin's existence at the same point value I think she'd see a lot more action.
Other formats I've played in include sidebar options (where Dund and Morsbane got their chance) and Heat of Battle (the unfortunate 2-3 units at the bottom of the list). Other than that, it's been pretty much straightforward with only point totals varying and sometimes glyphs, sometimes not. Raelin is in a similar category as Q9 and the rats. She's helped out Deathstalkers, Obsidians and Warden 816. |

New fun(?) fact: I've used at least one unit from 21 of the 36 small boosters. Waves 3 and 9 are the ones letting me down most.

As my immediate target is to use the remaining RotV figures I've been vaguely musing about how to do that. I'm not sure what point total events are coming up, so I figured I'd concentrate on a core for each unit that can be expanded:
Finn: 80 Hawthorne: 90 Knights x3: 210 Total: 380pts, 14 hexes. Needs a unit that would benefit from Finn's spirit and be good in clean-up. Krav Maga and Marro Warriors are natural options. Maybe a non-Izumi Samurai squad as that would give another new unit. Agent Carr: 100 Agent Skahen: 120 Laglor: 110 Total: 330pts, 3 hexes. Add agent squads to get the most out of Laglor and because being able to attack three times on an order marker is essential. Microcorps x2 would take it to 530pts and give another new unit. Mimring: 150 Krug: 120 Swogs x2: 50 Arrow Gruts x2: 80 Total: 400pts, 14 hexes. Add more gruts and swogs to get to the total. Drake (RotV): 110 ???? Not really any synergy to exploit here so he can get dropped into most armies acceptably, preferably ones that already have range and multiple attackers. After that I guess a natural target might be all of Vydar. If the Micrcorps get fielded in the army above that leaves X17, Sudema and the Gorillinators. |
