Vampyres

I hate vampires.

I have some small experience ghost hunting (which I won’t go into), some experience in supernatural folklore, and my first impulse is to kill vampires immediately. You can’t trust those suckers to be nice no matter what they say.

The Esenwein clan are bad enough, but my sons have recently taken to designing new custom vampires. We have quite a lovely undead drawer, with lots of skeleton cavalry, various spirits and ghosts that can possess other figures. We have a custom haunted forest, Bleakwood, and specialized revenants that haunt it. The Nazgul from the Lord of The Rings have also joined our game, thanks to a lucky find of their metal figures at a yard sale. But none of these things are as powerful as the vampires.

Our game has evolved to the point where we take themed armies, or “drawers”, for every battle. Previously the recipe for vampire demise was Soulberg pie, but now in our game unless you take the metalhead...

The Big Move

Well, I just completed a major move: Atlanta to Santa Fe. My wife has been working in New Mexico since August while the kids and I were in Georgia. We're excited to be back together and living in such a beautiful place. Our house has a nice view of the mountains and my younger daughter and I have been exploring our acreage and have already found several awesome places to make cool pics with HeroScape minis. (Her idea, not mine. I swear.) The only negative so far is our "rural high speed internet" is slooow. I feel like I'm back in 1998. Anyway, can't wait to be active on the site again once we're all settled. (And to unpack my 'Scape. My wife will kill me if she sees how many boxes it took to hold it all.)

Kings & Chronicles...A Long Process

After quite a few games and plenty of small tweaks, it has become obvious that the game in its current state is just too long. It is also obvious that the whole Assyrian invasion isn't even close to being nailed down in terms of both timing and balance.

What I've decided to do is a pretty serious overhaul of the game. Here are the things that seem to be working well and will remain essentially the same:

1. The Event Cards. These cards are sort of a cross between We the People (now Washington's War) and War of the Ring. All cards contain both an event and a point value. (They also contain a Battle modifier and may be played during combat to gain a bonus) The events cause certain historical events to happen, while the points may be spent to raise armies, build fortresses, declare war, make treaties, or move and attack with your armies. While I'm still tweaking the events for balance, the card-driven approach works well.

2. Combat. The combat system...
